It is situated along the western shores of Lake Kasumigaura, the second largest lake in Japan. The Tokyo metropolis lies about 60 km to the south, and Tsukuba science city borders Tsuchiura to the west. It is a sister city to Palo Alto, California. ==Demographics== As of January 1, 2010, the city has an estimated population of 144,399 and a population density of 1,268.66 persons per km². The total area of the city is 113.82 km².
